Android 5.0 announced in Google I/O 2014 – Developers conference held on 25-26 Jun 2014. Along with other android updates like Android Wear, Android Auto, Android TV and lot of other updates/upgrades Google announced an update for the next version of Android. Take a look to the list of features announced at Google I/O 2014.

Android 5.0 is called as “Android L”. This version of android has a lot of new features and complete transformation for the earlier versions of Android. Still Android L is not released to the public, but for the developers, it will be available in few days. Lets see the features listed on the Android L version.

Material Design :

One of the major update of android 5.0 is “Material Design“. The interface in the android will be the major change in this version. The UI and everything has been redesigned. The navigation bar at the bottom of Android has three simple shapes – a triangle, circle and square. Animations are natural and simple. The action of one animations will be connected with the next. Enhanced Notifications and Lock Screen:
Lock Screen and notifications merged together in this version. So that you can get the notifications on the lock screen itself and you can swipe on any notification to unlock the device. You will get the notifications on the top of the screen even when you are playing a game which is called as “Headsup Notifications”. Time to charge will also be displayed on the lock screen.

Battery Saver :
Android 5.0 comes with battery saver mode, so you can have 90 more mins of battery usage in a day. Battery Saver functionality is integrated using “Project Volta”.

What is Project Volta :
Project Volta is an umbrella name for several improvements in Android 5.0, which includes the optimizations of subsystems, better display of battery usage, a new job scheduler and new Power Saver mode.

Battery Historian:
Battery Historian is a new app which gives you the detailed information of the processes which consuming more battery , so can take action against the app using more battery on you android device.

Burst-mode camera APIs:
Using this API, on supported devices you can able to capture uncompressed YUV capture at full 8 MP resolution at 30 FPS.

h.265:
This is the next version of video codec after h.264. h.265 will used on Blu-ray discs, so the 5.0 devices can encode larger size videos as well.

Android RunTime:
Androids new Runtime which replaces Dalvik.

Android L Keyboard:

Android L keyboard was designed with simple and elegant views. The new keyboard is designed to merge with the material design. Try experience the L keyboard on your earlier versions of android here

Do Not Disturb :
Using this feature you can turn off notifications, calls for a specific time period.

Download Android L Developer Preview :
Developers can download the developer preview to start using and making improvements in Android L. Go to Android L Developer Preview official page and download the SDK.

Android L Release Date :
Developers can avail the new android version from June 26 2014.

Motorola confirmed that Moto X and Moto G will receive Android 5.0 update in few months. HTC also confirmed the update will it soon on their selected devices.
