A few days back, it has been rumored that Bluetooth’s next version will be announced soon. On 16th Jun 2016, Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced their next major version of Bluetooth officially. The next version is called as Bluetooth 5 and it will be coming late 2016 to early 2017. The newer version will have advanced features like extended range, 2x faster speed in transfer than the current versions. “Bluetooth 5 will transform the way people experience the IoT by making it something that happens simply and seamlessly around them,” said Mark Powell, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “Increasing operation range will enable connections to IoT devices that extend far beyond the walls of a typical home, while increasing speed supports faster data transfers and software updates for devices. And now with the ability to broadcast a much richer set of information, Bluetooth 5 will make beacons, location awareness, and other connectionless services an even more relevant part of an effortless and seamless IoT experience”

Key Features of Bluetooth 5:

  • 2x Faster – Bluetooth 5 will be twice as fast as Bluetooth 4.2 LE version. This will transfer data faster and optimize responsiveness.
  • Increased Broadcasting – The newer version increases data broadcasting by 800%.
  • Location Based Capabilities – Bluetooth 5 will add few extra navigation functionalities which allow you to discover location-relevant information and navigation.
  • Connection Less IoT[Internet of Things] – Bluetooth 5 has support for IoT, which makes full-home and building and outdoor use cases a reality.

The company Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) estimates that more than 371 million Bluetooth enabled beacons are projected to ship by 2020.

“There are 8.2 billion Bluetooth products in use, and the enhancements in Bluetooth 5 and planned future Bluetooth technical advancements mean that Bluetooth will be in more than one-third of all installed IoT devices by 2020. The drive and innovation of Bluetooth will ensure our technology continues to be the IoT solution of choice for all developers. – Mark Powell”
