Google officially released the first ever developer preview build for Android P. Android P Developer Preview 1 is now available for download. Android P is now officially the next major Android operating system version. The developer preview is made available as a flashable ROM and not through the Android Beta Program for now, because the preview is intended only for developers. Google will open up the enrollments for the beat program in the coming days.
The flashable ROM is available for the Pixel devices [Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL]. Don’t worry, if you don’t have a Pixel device, you can use the Android Emulator to test your app and explore Android P.
You can get an Android P system image for development and testing in these ways:
- Download a Developer Preview system image and flash the device.
- Set up an Android Emulator in Android Studio.

As these are the Manually flashed system images, hence it won’t automatically receive OTA updates to later Developer Preview milestone builds or the final, production version. So, make sure to keep your environment up-to-date and flash a new system image at each Developer Preview milestone.
